PROP recently presented at the United Nations Commission on Narcotic Drugs policy meeting in Vienna, Austria.
The Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND) was established by Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) resolution 9(I) in 1946, to assist the ECOSOC in supervising the application of the international drug control treaties. The CND reviews and analyzes the global drug situation, considering supply and demand reduction. It takes action through resolutions and decisions.
Three panelists from the United States discussed their nation’s opioid crisis, including the role played by pharmaceutical companies in causing the crisis and the current state of the problem. Lessons that other nations can learn from mistakes made in the United States were emphasized.

G. Caleb Alexander, MD, MS is a Professor of Epidemiology and Medicine at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, where he serves as founding co-Director of the Center for Drug Safety and Effectiveness and Principal Investigator of the Johns Hopkins-FDA Center of Excellence in Regulatory Science and Innovation (JH-CERSI).
Bridget G. Brennan is the Special Narcotics Prosecutor for the City of New York. She established units to investigate heroin trafficking, violent gangs, and money laundering, using sophisticated analytic tools and investigative techniques.
Andrew Kolodny, MD is co-founder and President of Physicians for Responsible Opioid Prescribing (PROP) and Medical Director of the Opioid Policy Research Collaborative at Brandeis University.
